Planner Error Message Dictionary

Data Elements Required, by File, in Default Order.

Error Messages are described.  First find the file the error relates to (from the Import Error Log), then scan through to find the message.

 

Time Parameters File

 

(Unlike other files, this is a 1-record file).

 

Error Messages not related to a particular data element

Invalid sep chars.  When a separation character was chosen to separate the items of data in an input record, the message indicates that an incorrect number of separation characters were counted.  This can happen if the wrong character was used on input e.g. tabs were expected but the user used commas.

 

Simple or Advanced Time Code

Maximum length: 1

Mandatory?  Yes.

Determines whether Simple or Advanced Time parameters are in force.  Values are 0=simple, 1=advanced.

Error Messages

Invalid Sim./Adv.Time.  The value was not 0 (Simple) or 1 (Advanced).

 

Operations Time Units per Demand Time Unit (simple Time only)

Maximum length: none

Mandatory?  No.

If the first parameter was 0=simple time, this indicates the number of operations time units in each demand period (or time bucket) .

Error Messages

Invalid Ops.TUS/Dmnd TU.  The value supplied was not a positive integer.

 

No. of Demand Periods (or time buckets)

Maximum length: none

Mandatory? No. Default is 1.

Self-explanatory.

Error Messages

Invalid No.Dmnd Periods.  The value supplied was not a positive integer.

 

Period Definition

Maximum length: 1

Mandatory?  Yes.

0=a day, 1=No. of days, 2=a week, 3=No. of weeks, 4=calendar month, 5=quarter.

Error Messages

Invalid Period Definit'n.  Value supplied not one of the above.

 

Number of Units in Period

Maximum length: None

Mandatory?  Yes.

If the Period Definition is 1 (No. of Days) or 3 (No. of Weeks), this number defines how many days or weeks.

Error Messages

Invalid No.Units in Per.  Value supplied not a positive integer.

 

Starting Date

Maximum length: 12

Mandatory?  No.

The date of the first day of period 1.

Error Messages

Invalid Starting Date.  The value supplied is not a valid date.

Starting Date too long.  Too many digits were supplied for it to be a valid date.

 

Operations Time Unit

Maximum length: none

Mandatory? No. Default is 0.

The time unit for operations times (0=sec, 1=min, 2=hour).

Error Messages

Invalid Ops Time Unit. Value supplied not one of the above.

 

Equipment File

 

Error Messages not related to a particular data element

Equipment Group

Maximum length: 11

Mandatory?  Yes.

A name for a group of identical equipment, usually machines.

Error Messages

Equ.Grp > 11 chrs. Value supplied is too long.

Equpt Grp missing.  No value was supplied.

Equip Grp already exists.  An Equipment Group with the same name has already been input.  Only one entry can be accepted.

 

Department

Maximum length: 11

Mandatory?  No.

The department to which the group belongs.

Error Messages

Dept. > 11 chrs.  The value supplied is too long.

 

Description

Maximum length: 20

Mandatory? No.

A description of the equipment e.g. milling m/c.

Error Messages

Descrptn. > 20 chrs.  The value supplied is too long.

 

Calendar Name

Maximum length: 25

Mandatory? Yes.

The name of the calendar that the equipment works to.   The user needs to enter details about the calendar before Equipment Import can happen.  Calendar details are key-entered to the Time Definition box.

Error Messages

Calendar > 25 chrs.  The value supplied is too long.

 

Number in the Equipment Group

Maximum length: none

Mandatory?  Yes.

Simply the number of identical machines or whatever in the group.

Error Messages

Invalid No in Grp.  The value supplied is not a positive integer.

 

Mean Time To Failure (MTTF)

Maximum length: none

Mandatory?  No

This information is usually taken from maintenance records, and often is not on the main system.  It can be omitted from the file and added by the user later by key entry.  If missing, a default value of 9999999 will be applied.

Error Messages

Invalid MTTF. A value was supplied but it isn't a positive integer.

 

Mean Time to Repair (MTTR)

Maximum length: none

Mandatory?  No.  

This information is also usually taken from maintenance records, and often is not on the main system.  It can be omitted from the file and added by the user later by key entry.  If missing, a default value of 0 will be applied.

Error Messages

Invalid MTTR.  A value was supplied but it isn't a positive integer.

 

Overtime

Maximum length: none

Mandatory?  No.

This is the percentage of overtime that the group works on average.  If omitted, zero will be assumed.

Invalid Overtime.  A value was supplied but it isn't a positive number.

 

Set-up Efficiency (percent)

Maximum length: none

Mandatory?  No. If omitted, 100% will be assumed.

This factor determines the extent to which set-up times are met.  Less than 100% means inefficiency i.e. more time is needed that is allowed.  A figure of 80% would indicate that a set-up on average would take 100/80 times as long as the official time (=5/4 or +25%).

Invalid Setup Eff.  A value was supplied but it isn't a positive number.

 

Run Time Efficiency (percent)

Maximum length: none

Mandatory?  No. If omitted, 100% will be assumed.

This factor determines the extent to which official run times are met. .  Less than 100% means inefficiency i.e. more time is needed that is allowed.  A figure of 80% would indicate that a run on average would take 100/80 times as long as the official time (=5/4 or +25%).

Labour File

 

Error Messages not related to a particular data element

Labour Group

Maximum length: 11

Mandatory?  Yes

The name of a group of similarly skilled workers e.g. welders, fork-truck drivers (which would have to be abbreviated).  Note that if people with the same skills work to different shift patterns, different Labour Groups must be created for them.

Error Messages

Lbr.Grp > 11 chrs. Value supplied is too long.

Lbr Grp missing.  No value was supplied.

Lbr Grp already exists.  An Equipment Group with the same name has alraedy been input.  Only one entry can be accepted.

 

Department

Maximum length: 11

Mandatory?  No.

The department to which the group belongs.  This is for the user's information only, the program does not use this.

Error Messages

Dept. > 11 chrs.  The value supplied is too long.

 

Description

Maximum length: 20

Mandatory?  No.

A short description of the labour group.

Error Messages

Descrptn. > 20 chrs.  The value supplied is too long.

 

Calendar Name

Maximum length: 25

Mandatory?  Yes

The calendar that the people in the labour group work to.   The calendar must be defined by the user by key-entry to this software before the Labour file is imported.

Manning Level

Maximum length:  none

Mandatory?   Yes.

The number of people who should be present all the time.  It is not the same as the total number of people in the Labour Group, it is the number "on shift" at any time.

Invalid Manning Level.  The value supplied is not a positive integer.

 

Time Unavailable (percentage)

Maximum length:  none

Mandatory?  No, if omitted will default to 0

Considering the hours available to be worked ( = hours in shift pattern x manning level), this is the percentage lost to meals, breaks etc.  This percentage may also be used to represent absenteeism.

Error Messages

Invalid Time Unav.  A value was supplied but it isn't a positive number.

 

Overtime

Maximum length:  no maximum

Mandatory?  No, if omitted will default to 0.

The average percent of overtime worked by the Labour Group.

Set-up Efficiency (percent)

Maximum length:  none

Mandatory?  No, if omitted will default to 100%

As many official times are not met in practice, this expresses the efficiency with which the times are met.  It is often measured, over a period, as the official hours' worth of output divided by the available hours.  This particular measurement is for set-up only.

The part numbers of all finished products should be included, as well as all components and raw materials.

Error Messages

Part No > 20 chrs.  The value supplied is too long.

P/No missing.  No value was supplied.

Part No already exists.  The Part Number was previously imported.  It cannot be imported more than once.

 

Sales Code

Maximum length:  14

Mandatory?  No

If the part number is for a finished product, it is likely that Sales will have their own code for the item.   Sales Code is for user information only, it has no role in any calculations.

Error Messages

Sales Code > 14 chrs.  The value supplied is too long.

 

Product

Maximum length:  11

Mandatory?  No

Normally this is the product that the part goes in to.  For common parts, it may be left blank.   Product is for user information only, it has no role in any calculations.

Error Messages

Product > 11 chrs.  The value supplied is too long.

 

Product Family

Maximum length:  11

Mandatory?  No

Products are often organised into families, and if that is the case, the family can be identified. Product Family is for user information only, it has no role in any calculations.

Description

Maximum length:  20

Mandatory?  No

This is a short description of the part.

Error Messages

Descrptn. > 20 chrs.  The value supplied is too long.

 

Lot Size

Maximum length:  none

Mandatory?  Yes, if Lot Sizing Policy is not 0.

This is the lot size or batch size in which this part is manufactured.  It determines the number of set-ups which will be calculated.

Error Messages

Invalid Lot Size.  The value supplied was blank or not a positive number.

 

Lot Sizing Policy?

Maximum length: 1

Mandatory? N

This indicates one of a number of lot sizing policies i.e. rules that influence computer processing.  The topics MRP (Material Requirements Planning), MRP Report and MRP Tutorial should be referred to for more detail.  The default value is 0 (use period quantity as lot size), other values are 1 (Fixed lot or batch size) and 2 (Minimum Lot Size).

Error Messages

LotSizing Policy invalid.  A value is supplied but it is none of the above.

 

MPS Code

Maximum length - 2

Mandatory? N

This indicates one of a number of MPS policies i.e. rules that influence computer processing.  The topic Construct an MPS way of working should be referred to for more detail.  The default value is 0 (add customer orders, end use demand and dependent demand).

Error Messages

MPS Code invalid.  A value is supplied but it isn't in the range 0 to 10.

 

Source

Maximum length:  1 - M (manufactured), P (purchased) or H (phantom)

Mandatory: Yes

Indicates if the part is to be manufactured, purchased or a phantom.

Error Messages

Source invalid.  The value supplied is not any of the above.

 

Lead Time

Maximum length: None

Mandatory: No.  If blank, defaults to 0.

The number of time periods allowed for making this part.

Error Messages

Invalid Lead Time.  A value is supplied but it isn't a positive integer.

Lead Time>max.  The value supplied is greater than the "No. of Demand Periods" defined in the Time Definition box.  This is possibly the most common error message, due to launching a Parts Import without previously setting the "No. of Demand Periods" parameter.

 

Order Generation Method

Maximum length:  1 - O (order), P (period)

Mandatory: No.

Indicates if the mfg or purchase orders are to be generated from the period's Planned Requirements (P), or one for each customer order (O).  Refer to the topic Pegging to Customer Orders for more information.

Value

Maximum length:  None.

Mandatory: N

The inventory value of 1 item.  The default is 0.

Error Messages

Invalid Value.  A value was supplied that was not zero or a positive number.

 

Safety Stock

Maximum length:  None

Mandatory:  N

A quantity of stock kept in reserve in case of supply problems.  The default is 0.

Error Messages

Invalid Sfty Stock.  A value was supplied that was not zero or a positive number.

 

Demand File

Part Number

Maximum length: 20

Mandatory?  Yes.  Part number may appear on each demand line, or on a separate line preceding the demand data.   

Only part numbers with an End Use Demand need to appear in this file (usually finished products).

Error Messages

File not sorted. The user can specify that the file is sorted by Part Number which speeds up the import process.  If chosen, but it is found that the file is not sorted, this message is generated.

Duplicate PN. If the file is specified as sorted, duplicate part numbers on successive input records are not expected, hence this message.

Part No not found.  The part number should have been loaded previously by a Parts file load, but the part number on the transaction was not found.

 

Period ID

Maximum length:  none

Mandatory?  Yes

This is the number of the demand periods, starting from 1.  For example, if 12 months were designated as demand periods, Period ID would have values between 1 and 12 inclusive.

Error Messages

Invalid Period ID.  The value supplied is not a positive integer.

Period ID > max.  The value supplied is greater than the "No. of Demand Periods" defined in the Time Definition box.

Duplicate Period ID.  A demand entered previously has the same Period ID.  Only one entry per demand period is allowed.

 

End Use Demand

Maximum length:  none

Mandatory?  Yes

This is the quantity expected to be shipped from the factory in the designated Period.  Usually only finished goods part numbers have an End Use Demand, but spares can also require an End Use Demand.

Error Messages

Invalid Quantity. The value supplied is not a positive number.

 

Linear Routings File, and Operations File

(The data elements are identical.)

Operation Name

Maximum length:  11

Mandatory?  Yes

The name of the operation e.g. Welding.  In some factories it may be numeric e.g. 0010

Error Messages

Op Name > 11 chrs.  The value supplied is too long.

Op Name missing.  There was no value supplied.

Duplicate Op Name.  The same operation name was previously loaded.  The same operation name cannot be entered twice for the same part.

 

Description

Maximum length:  20

Mandatory?  No

A short description of the operation.

Error Messages

Invalid Descrpn.  The value supplied is too long.

 

Equipment Group

Maximum length:  11

Mandatory?  No, but if present, either Equipment Set-up Time or Equipment Run Time must be non-zero.

The equipment group (usually a machine type) that the operation takes place on.

Error Messages

Invalid Equ. Group.  The Equipment Group should already have been entered either by key entry or an Equipment File import, but it wasn't found.

An Equ. Time must be >0.  This value is non-blank, in which case either Equipment Set-up Time or Equipment Run Time must be non-zero, but neither was non-zero.

 

Equipment Set-up Time

Maximum length:  none

Mandatory? Conditionally yes, if Equipment Group present and Equipment Run Time absent or zero. Will default to 0 if not present.

The time that the equipment is being set up for this operation.

Error Messages

Invalid Equ.Set-up Time.  The value supplied is not zero or a positive number.

 

Equipment Run Time

Maximum length:  none

Mandatory? Conditionally yes, if Equipment Group present and Equipment Setup Time absent or zero.  Will default to 0 if not present.

The time per piece that the equipment needs to perform the operation.

Error Messages

Invalid Equ.Run Time.  The value supplied is not zero or a positive number.

 

Labour Group

Maximum length:  11

Mandatory?  No, but if present, either Labour Set-up Time must be non-zero, or if Labour Group (Run Only) is absent, Labour Run Time must be non-zero.  If  Labour Group (Run Only) is present then Labour Run Time (Run Only) must have a valid non-zero value.

The Labour Group performing the operation.  E.g. welders, testers.

Error Messages

Invalid Labour Group.  The Labour Group should already have been entered either by key entry or a Labour File import, but it wasn't found.

An Labour Time must be >0.  This value is non-blank, in which case either Labour Set-up Time or Labour  Run Time must be non-zero, but neither was non-zero.

Lbr. Run Time must be >0. Labour Group (Run Only) was present but Labour Run Time was not a positive number.

 

Labour Set-up Time

Maximum length:  none

Mandatory?  Conditionally yes, if Labour Group present and Labour Run Time absent or zero. Will default to 0 if not present.

The time that the person or persons from the Labour Group spend in setting-up to perform the operation.

Error Messages

Invalid Lbr.Set-up Time.  The value supplied was not zero or a positive number.

 

Labour Group (Run Only)

Maximum length:  11

Mandatory?  No

Often, different Labour Groups are used for set-up and run.  If present, this indicates the Labour Group that runs the operation.

Error Messages

Invalid Lbr.Grp.(RO).  A value was supplied.  The Labour Group should already have been entered either by key entry or a Labour File import, but it wasn't found.

 

Labour Run Time

Maximum length:  None

Mandatory?  Conditionally yes, if Labour Group present and Labour Setup Time absent, or if Labour Group (Run Only) present..  Will default to 0 if absent.

The time that the Labour Group spends on the operation, per piece.  If Labour Group (Run Only) is present, then that is the relevant Labour Group.

Error Messages

Invalid Lbr.Run Time.  The value supplied was not zero or a positive number.

 

Routings File

The Routings File is only required if Routings are to be non-linear.

 

Error Messages not related to a particular data element

Invalid sep chars.  When a separation character was chosen to separate the items of data in an input record, the message indicates that an incorrect number of separation characters were counted.  This can happen if the wrong character was used on input e.g. tabs were expected but the user used commas.

 

Part Number

Maximum length: 20

Mandatory?  Yes.  Part number may appear on each line, or on a separate line preceding the routings data.   

Error Messages

File not sorted. The user can specify that the file is sorted by Part Number which speeds up the import process.  If set, but it is found that the file is not sorted, this message is generated.

Duplicate PN. If the file is specified as sorted, duplicate part numbers on successive input records are not expected, hence this message.

Part No not found.  The part number should have been loaded previously by a Parts file load, but the part number on the transaction was not found.

Duplicate From/To Ops. It was found that the same From Op/To Op combination was previously entered on the file.  It is not allowed for the same combination to appear twice.

 

From Operation.

Maximum Length:  11

Mandatory?  Yes

The operation that the work is leaving.  The pseudo-operation START must precede the first true operation.  In other words, the first record may look like:

Error Messages

Op Name > 11 chrs.  The value supplied is too long.

From Op missing.  No value was supplied.

 

To Operation

Maximum Length:  11

Mandatory?  Yes

The operation that the work is going to.  Usually this is another operation, but can be FINISH, denoting that the work is exiting the routing, or SCRAP, for those parts being discarded for quality reasons.

Error Messages

Op Name > 11 chrs.  The value supplied is too long.

To Op missing.  No value was supplied.

 

Percentage Following

Maximum Length:  none

Mandatory?  Yes

The percentage of pieces following this route.  Usually it is 100%, but in the case of scrap, for example, say 5% of pieces go to scrap.  

Error Messages

Invalid % Following.  No value was supplied or it was not a positive number.

 

Components File

Part Number

Component Part Number

Maximum Length:  20

Mandatory?  Yes

This is a part used to make the above Part Number.

Error Messages

Invalid Comp. P/N.  The part number must already exist in the system but it was not found.

Cmp.PN > 20 chrs.  The value supplied is too long.

Duplicate Comp. PN.  This component was entered by a previous record, and more than one is not allowed for the same component part number.

 

Quantity

Maximum Length:  None

Mandatory?  Yes

This is the quantity of the component part needed to make the parent part.

Error Messages

Invalid Quantity.  The value supplied is not a valid positive number.

 

Customer Order File

Part Number

This is the identifier for the customer order.

Error Messages

C/Ordr.No > 14 chrs.  The value supplied is too long.

Duplicate C/Ordr.Nos.  A customer order with this same order number was previously entered  It is not permitted to accept another with the same order number.

 

Line Number

Maximum Length:  15

Mandatory?  Yes

This is the identifier for the particular line of the customer order. Use "1" as default.

Error Messages

 

Quantity

Maximum Length:  None

Mandatory?  Yes

This is the quantity of the component part needed to make the parent part.

Error Messages

Invalid Quantity.  The value supplied is not a positive number.

 

Due Date

Maximum Length: 10

This is the due date (i.e. for when the order must be ready to ship), in the format

DD/MM/YYYY (single digit days and months are OK.)

Error Messages

Invalid Due Date.  The value supplied is not a valid date.

Due Date too long.  The value supplied is too long for the date format required.

 

Manufacturing Order File

 

Error Messages not related to a particular data element

This is the identifier for the order.

Duplicate C/Ordr.Nos.  A customer order with this same order number was previously entered  It is not permitted to accept another with the same order number.

 

Quantity

Maximum Length:  None

Mandatory?  Yes

This is the quantity of the component part needed to make the parent part.

Error Messages

Invalid Quantity.  The value supplied is not a positive number.

 

Due Date

Maximum Length: 10

This is the due date (i.e. for when the order must be ready to ship), in the format

DD/MM/YYYY (single digit days and months are OK.)

Purchase Order File

Order Number

This is the identifier for the order.

Error Messages

C/Ordr.No > 14 chrs.  The value supplied is too long.

Duplicate C/Ordr.Nos.  A customer order with this same order number was previously entered  It is not permitted to accept another with the same order number.

 

Quantity

Maximum Length:  None

Mandatory?  Yes

This is the quantity of the component part needed to make the parent part.

Error Messages

Invalid Quantity.  The value supplied is not a positive number.

 

Due Date

Maximum Length: 10

This is the due date (i.e. for when the order must be ready to ship), in the format

DD/MM/YYYY (single digit days and months are OK.)

Error Messages

Invalid Due Date.  The value supplied is not a valid date.

Due Date too long.  The value supplied is too long for the date format required.

 

Inventory File

Invalid sep chars.  When a separation character was chosen to separate the items of data in an input record, the message indicates that an incorrect number of separation characters were counted.  This can happen if the wrong character was used on input e.g. tabs were expected but the user used commas.

 

Part Number

Maximum length: 20

Mandatory?  Yes.  Part number may appear on each line, or on a separate line preceding the component data.   

Error Messages

File not sorted. The user can specify that the file is sorted by Part Number which speeds up the import process.  If set, but it is found that the file is not sorted, this message is generated.

Duplicate PN. If the file is specified as sorted, duplicate part numbers on successive input records are not expected, hence this message.

Maximum Length:  14

Mandatory?  Yes

This is the physical location of the parts.  For example. Stores.  More that one location can be specified for each part (for example, Stores 1, Stores2, KanBan 1...)

Location > 14 chrs.  The value supplied is too long.

Duplicate Location.  The same location was previously entered, and another record with the same location is not allowed.

 

Quantity

Maximum Length:  None

Mandatory?  Yes

This is the quantity of the part needed at the given location.

Invalid Quantity.  The value supplied is not a positive number.
